Dr. Avila-Ortiz completed his DDS and PhD training programs at the University of Granada (Spain) before moving to Ann Arbor (USA), where he attained a MS degree and a Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Michigan. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Aside from being engaged in scholarly, teaching, mentoring and administrative activities, Dr. Avila-Ortiz maintains a faculty practice limited to Periodontics and Oral Implantology in Iowa City (USA). His research spans a variety of clinical topics related to periodontal and implant therapy, such as management of the extraction site, maxillary sinus augmentation and the application of digital technologies in clinical practice and research.

DESCRIPTION

This program will provide an overview on relevant therapeutic aspects related to management of the extraction site and implant site development approaches using bone grafts, barrier membranes and matrices/scaffolds. Fundamental concepts and important terminological nuances pertaining to the subject matter will be addressed. Guidelines pertaining to proper case selection and treatment planning, including surgical and restorative considerations, will be reviewed with an emphasis on relevant scientific evidence and its application in clinical practice to optimize treatment outcomes. Well-documented clinical examples will be presented to illustrate emerging concepts and technical tips.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the basic principles of ridge preservation and augmentation in the context of implant therapy
  • Know the different types of bone graft materials and their main properties
  • Recognize the differences between barrier membranes and matrices / scaffolds
  • Review the sequence of biological events that take place subsequent to both tooth extraction and bone augmentation procedure
  • Identify different treatment options available for the management of the extraction site and deficient alveolar ridges in the context of implant therapy
  • Discuss the role that some local and systemic factors may play in healing dynamics
