Lecture - Peri-implant phenotype and soft tissue dehiscences: classification, prevention and treatment

Dental implants can have esthetic complications. The prevention of the peri-implant soft tissue dehiscences largely depends on the hard and soft tissue phenotype, among other factors. It is therefore crucial understanding the role of peri-implant soft tissue phenotype and its augmentation on the outcomes of implant therapy.

A recent classification of peri-implant soft tissue dehiscences has been proposed with the goal of providing a uniform system for the diagnosis of these conditions, and, at the same time, guiding clinicians on the selection of the most indicated treatment approach for each type of esthetic complication.

The lecture will focus on the concept of soft tissue phenotype and the rationale for its augmentation.

Learning objectives:

  • Understanding the role of soft tissue phenotype on peri-implant esthetic, tissue stability, and health
  • Learning the recent classification of peri-implant soft tissue dehiscences
  • Learning how to prevent implant esthetic failures
  • Understanding how to select the most appropriate treatment approach for each type of peri-implant soft tissue dehiscence

Hands-On Workshop

In the hands-on session participants will perform different approaches for soft tissue phenotype modification at anterior and posterior dental implants. Participants will also understand how to prevent and treat implant esthetic complications by reviewing different case scenarios and their related management, and by performing several surgical techniques on a customized plastic model specifically designed for this session

Learning objectives:

  • Understanding the role of soft tissue phenotype on peri-implant esthetic, tissue stability, and health
  • Practicing soft tissue augmentation procedures at posterior and anterior implant sites on plastic models
  • Learning how to prevent implant esthetic failures
  • Understanding how to select the most appropriate treatment approach for each type of peri-implant soft tissue dehiscence
  • Performing the surgical-prosthetic approach and the combined horizontal and vertical soft tissue augmentation for the treatment of implant esthetic complications

About Dr. Tavelli

Lorenzo Tavelli, DDS, MS, PhD is full-time assistant professor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he is the director of the Advance Graduate Education program in Periodontology.

Dr. Tavelli graduated from the University of Milan and then completed his three-year residency in Periodontics and Master of Science at the University of Michigan. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

Dr. Tavelli’s main focus in clinical research and daily practice is microsurgical and minimally invasive soft tissue grafting procedures around teeth and dental implants, where he has been pioneering in the combined use of High Frequency Doppler Ultrasonography and wound healing biomarkers for assessing graft perfusion and the surgical outcomes. Dr. Tavelli has been extensively lecturing worldwide on these topics at the main scientific symposia. He has published more than 100 scholarly publications in the main international peer-reviewed journals while serving as an Associate Editor for Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research.

He was the recipients of several research awards, such as the 2023 American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Earl Robinson Regeneration Award, the 2022 AAP Foundation Nevins Clinical Research Fellowship, the 2021 Goldman Clinical Research award from the Italian Society of Periodontology, and the 2020 AAP Balint Orban Research Award, among others.

Lecture: Category 2 - 3 CE points

Workshop: Category 2 - 2 CE points

Note: the OSP Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held immediately following the lecture and before lunch.
